Flame retardants for wood and cellulosic materials

Identifying the right flame retardants for wood or cellulosic materials can be challenging. However, these materials are increasingly being used in a wider variety of applications due to the growing trend towards renewable raw materials. Let's take a quick look at some of the Aflammit® flame retardant solutions THOR can offer you.

Variety in Application, Complexity in Design, and Required Profiles

Wood and cellulosic materials have become essential in a wide range of industries. With a strong focus on renewable raw materials, their importance will continue to grow in the coming years. Of course, this will naturally bring flame retardant properties for these raw materials into focus.

THOR helps to fulfil a wide range of raw material and application needs with expertise and a broad portfolio. We offer numerous phosphorus and nitrogen-based flame retardants for impregnation, or in combination with binders, for coating applications.

For paper and textile impregnation processes, products such as Aflammit® MSG, Aflammit® KRE, or Aflammit® TL 1343 are well-established solutions within the industry. Aflammit MSG and KRE can also be used in wood impregnation. In some applications where (semi-) durability is needed, our portfolio is completed by reactive products such as Aflammit® FMB.

For cotton fibres in workwear applications, we offer a full package of THPC-based flame retardants. The well-known Aflammit® SAP is supplementally upgraded with Aflammit® TL 1127 and Aflammit® STW, which offer a refined property profile. Learn more about this in our specific article about workwear.

This is just a small selection of potential end uses for wood or cellulosic materials, and what should be be considered in terms of the property profile. In various applications, such as in the wood or textile sector, this material can be additionally coated. THOR has a whole range of options to meet coating requirements, from antimony and halogen-free flame retardants and binders, to customised coater-ready formulations.

Let’s talk about your material, application, and requirements!

Future-Proof Certified Solutions and OEKOTEX

THOR's technological focus for flame retardant solutions leans to antimony and halogen-free systems. The aim is not only to offer future-ready solutions but to also provide additional benefits beyond the property profiles. To simplify operations for our customers and because many cellulose materials are used in consumer-related applications, THOR has had selected flame retardant products certified according to relevant fire standards and has an OEKOTEX listing for individual products. For example, Aflammit® MSG and Aflammit® KRE are certified to rigorous DIN standards and listed under OEKOTEX.

For specific labels or standards required depending on the end use or customer need, our specialised regulatory compliance team are on standby to help.

THOR offers tailored solutions for nearly any material, designed to meet your specific application requirements. We view ourselves as your partner, not just a supplier, dedicated to helping you achieve your goals with comprehensive support and collaboration.
